Fish restaurant on the Weser
Northern German fish the way it should be: honestly prepared, well seasoned and served right by the water.
If you want fresh fish in Bremen, you don't need to drive to the coast. Kangaroo Island sits right on the Schlachte, the river promenade in the heart of the city – and this is where you get fish dishes that hold their own against anything in Cuxhaven or Bremerhaven. We have been part of the Schlachte since 1999, and over the last few years the bar has grown into a proper restaurant: fish and good food now take centre stage.
Our best known dish is the Bremen pan-fried fish. We take the “catch of the day”, sear it in the pan and serve it with handmade fried potatoes, a creamy mustard sauce and a small side salad. A classic that shows what we care about: no gimmicks, just produce, craft and timing. Just as straightforward is the whole plaice “Finkenwerder style” – with bacon, onions and fried potatoes, a plate many guests cross the river for.
Then there are the North Sea classics: matjes herring with creamy sauce, fried potatoes and pickled gherkin, a North Sea cod loin with mustard-dill sauce and cucumber salad, and pike-perch fillet with a potato crust, crisp from the oven. If you like it purist, order the pollock fillet with potato salad – small or large, depending on your appetite. And if you simply fancy something crispy, go for our fish & chips at 9,90 € with remoulade and lemon.
Fresh also means seasonal here. Our fish menu changes with what the market offers. In early summer matjes herring arrives, in late summer chanterelles come as a side, and fillets and preparations change with the catch. If you want to know what is especially good today, just ask our service team – the answer is honest, even when it is “take the plaice today”.
The view is part of the meal. Our terrace on the Weser sits right on the promenade: ships pass by, in the evening the Schlachte glows in warm light, and on summer days the outdoor area turns into a beer garden. Inside you sit on two floors – cosy for two, but big enough for family celebrations, company dinners or a round after work. The kitchen is open daily until 10 pm, on Fridays and Saturdays even until midnight. Late-night fish cravings are expressly allowed.
„Absolut empfehlenswert – einmaliges Fischrestaurant an der Schlachte!“

As a fish restaurant in Bremen city centre we are exactly where everyone in Bremen meets anyway: on the Schlachte, the promenade along the river Weser. From the market square with the town hall and the Roland statue it is less than a five-minute walk, and from the main station the tram brings you to Am Brill in a few stops. If you are visiting Bremen city centre, you are practically at our door.
The best part: you sit centrally and still right by the water. Our terrace opens straight onto the Weser – ships, sunsets and the buzz of the Schlachte included. Read more about our location and terrace on the page restaurant on the Schlachte, and find every dish in our menu.

Yes. We take in fresh deliveries regularly and build our fish menu around what is available. The “catch of the day” goes straight into our Bremen pan-fried fish, alongside plaice, pike-perch, cod loin and matjes herring while they are in season.
There are several car parks around the Schlachte, including Am Brill and in the city centre – all just a few minutes on foot. By bus or tram, get off at the Am Brill stop.
Absolutely. Alongside fish we serve burgers from the grill, Viennese-style schnitzel, currywurst, salads, vegetarian starters such as avocado bruschetta and a pinsa margherita for kids.
Yes. We are a fish restaurant right in the middle of Bremen: Schlachte 30A, 28195 Bremen, directly on the riverbank. It is about a five-minute walk from the market square and Bremen town hall, and the Am Brill stop is just around the corner.
Grab your table on the Schlachte – inside on two floors or outside by the river.
